In 1629, under the influence of Cardinal Richelieu, the Company of One Hundred Associates was formed, under whose
power the vast country of New France was placed. The Company had the right of trade and fishing. They pledged to
establish 6,000 colonists within 15 years and to provide for the support of Catholic clergymen in each
settlement. Pierre Desportes was one of the Company.
